COLD TESTS

I have most of my time on this planet had the privilege to work in the outdoors and with very well-motivated colleagues. Since we often used LPC (Leather Personnel Carriers) for movement we always were talking about and hunted for lighter, qualitative materiel system that could bring down the loads on our backs.

During most of the years from 1989 - 2006 I participated in, and later was responsible for development, of personal equipment at the unit. And over the years I had to resort to various successful and less successful equipment tests.

I must take this opportunity to thank you soldiers and officers, Swedish and foreign, who stood out with some of these tests. Not least the times that the stuff already at an early stage proved to be worthless, but you still carried out the tests.

To summarize experience when it comes to the equipment, the best equipment is often the ones that are simpler in design. It becomes more versatile and often it could be used for a lot of different things. Quality equipment is often also the ones that work in the extreme cold. They are made from demand that they should be easy to handle them with mittens and etc. These types of equipment tend also to be those who work best in other climates.

But the most important and often most difficult task is to put together the equipment to smooth systems that works in conjunction with each other. And when packed together it should both weigh as little as possible and at the same time give the possibility for the user to survive in extreme conditions.

“Less of the more” sometime mean, - Go light - freeze at night! So I press to the equipment purchased that the stuff will never come to its right unless the user knows how to use it. Devote time and work with the stuff and soon you will find that the number of gadgets you carry with you is often based on how good your own knowledge and skills are.

Cold Skills

Individuals that has knowledge and skills for survival under extreme winter conditions are people that can take Survival to its limits. My firm belief is that winter training is the best selection there is for soldiers. Those who are capable of surviving under winter conditions will be able to survive the other climate types. The bitter cold is never forgiving. It is simply impossible to lack the self discipline to think ahead and take the necessary measures that must be made for one’s own survival.

During my years in the military, I was responsible for a number of Arctic Winter Warfare Course for the various foreign units. The emphasis in these courses was to learn different tips and tricks to avoid FROSTBITE and improve individual skills for survival in these extreme conditions.

To see the course students fear and uncertainty for the new element (cold climate) turn to more self-confident behavior, one of my best memories from different courses over the years.

These skills are something that increasingly is becoming history among us. And Cold Skills will from 2010 start to offer courses in which we share these skills.

Cold Skills courses are also addressed to customers who don´t have the same extreme demands on their equipment and knowledge or skills outlined above.

Cold Skills range of equipment and services also helps you as you want to use a more active outdoor life. Why don’t take the friends or family out for a hike in the mountains and try to live in a way, but with modern equipment, that we as humans has done for the majority of our history.

One of the highlights with my family and friends are the times we set goals which meant that we as a team succeeded in obtaining the goal.

Outdoor and mountain hikes is not such a big challenge that many believe. But it can be a less pleasant experience if no one has any outdoor skills. 1-2 days joint training provides a sufficient basis for a smoother mountain or outdoor vacation.
